Managing a Loved One’s Incontinence:
A Guide to Proper Use of Incontinence Products
Caring for a loved one dealing with incontinence can be tough, but with the right products and techniques, you can ensure their comfort and health. Here are key tips for using incontinence products correctly:
Proper Application of Incontinence Products
To help your loved one stay comfortable and confident, make sure they are using the right product, size, and absorbency level. Avoid using multiple products at once, as this can cause leakage. A snug fit is essential for optimal performance.
Changing Products Regularly
Regular product changes are crucial to prevent discomfort and skin irritation. Change the product whenever there is leakage to maintain cleanliness and reduce the risk of infection.
Personal Hygiene Care
Each time you change a product, cleanse the affected areas thoroughly from front to back. This helps prevent infection, such as Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs). We recommend using our disposable adult washcloths, as soap and water can be harsh on sensitive skin.
Preventing Skin Rashes
Incontinence-related rashes occur when moisture stays on the skin too long. Ensure the product is the right fit and change it promptly to avoid skin damage. If a rash develops, consult with your healthcare provider for guidance.
Managing Odor
For clothes, add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the wash to remove urine odor.
Troubleshooting Incontinence Care
If you’re having trouble with leaks, consider adjusting the product’s absorbency level or size. Use our Height/Weight charts to ensure the right fit, as products that are too small or too large can cause discomfort or leaks.
You Are Not Alone!
Caring for someone with incontinence can be overwhelming, but remember, millions of families face this challenge. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for expert advice and support.
